Chinese Community Hub growing fitness and friends

When the ActivAsian Walk With Us programme started in West Auckland in early in 2018, the focus was on growing recreation opportunities through walking and comradeship.

But the initiative has delivered much more for West Auckland’s Chinese community. Following the success of Walk With Us and its twice-weekly walking group, the Waitākere Chinese Association was formally established in February as an incorporated society.

Its member base is predominantly made up of recent migrant retirees with limited accessibility, all eager to connect with others. With support from Sport Waitākere, the Association’s committee has successfully organised two community events including a tour of the Karangahake Gorge, enjoyed by 92 participants, and a cultural festival, which welcomed more than 170 participants and provided 15 different kinds of traditional Chinese art and cultural performances.

The association is now organising their own weekly outdoor bushwalks for their members with 25 participants attending on average.

All new members are welcome. Please contact ActivAsian Community Coordinator Jason Li on Jason.Li@sportwaitakere.nz for more information.
