Healthy Active Learning Workshop Aims to Transform School Camps

A Hands-On Workshop Fosters Inclusivity and Fun for Students

Schools across New Zealand are being encouraged to rethink their approach to school camps and make them more inclusive and enjoyable for students with the Healthy Active Learning Workshop – Revisioning School Camps.

The event aimed to introduce educators to innovative concepts that promote local engagement, responsiveness, and student-centeredness in school camps. Participants had the amazing opportunity to review their current camp programs with our Healthy Active Learning team, establish parameters for the revised camps, and envision an exciting future for these educational experiences.

This hands-on workshop featured numerous examples of camp best practices, fostering discussions and idea-sharing among attendees, while also providing valuable insights into planning tools and engaging camp activities that can be adapted to different age groups, learning contexts, and camp settings.

The key message for the workshop was clear: it's an opportunity for schools to reinvent their approach to school camps, making them more inclusive and engaging for students. The organizers are encouraging all schools to attend and embrace this chance for positive change in their educational programs.

Teachers from our local schools had a great time and were challenged to rethink their current school camp practice.  A special thank you goes out to Sophie Watson from EONZ for facilitating the workshop and to Konini School for hosting us for the day.

With our “Revisioning School Camps” event being a success, the Healthy Active Learning team would love to spread this knowledge far and wide to any other schools who are interested.
