Kiwisport initiative

Sport Waitakere, in response to the Kiwisport initiative, has facilitated a series of education and community consultation meetings to provide information and to seek ideas for the allocation of Kiwisport funding for the Waitakere region. The purpose of this update is to keep you informed of the progress we have made to date.

At each of the six consultation meetings, feedback was sought and priorities were identified for the Waitakere region. Listed below are the consolidated findings from all six meetings and our online survey.

- School / Club / Community links
- Training and professional development: Volunteers, parents, teachers, coaches
- Sport Coordinator in cluster model
- Fundamental movement skills / modified sport / basic sports skills

To expand further on the local findings, there was a Regional Sporting Organisations (RSO) forum held on 19 October to look at what the issues and priorities might be from a wider sports perspective. The findings from this group were very similar to the local findings and the consolidated priorities are listed below.

- Lack of volunteers
- Drop off rates in participation
- Facilities access and utilisation
- Fundamental movement skill development

There are 4 Regional Sports Trusts (RST’s) in Auckland and we have all undertaken a process in consulting with our respective communities to ascertain priorities for each area. We also cross boundaries on a number of levels, and sporting organisations is just one example. With this in mind and our some similar identified priorities, we have come together to look at exploring possible projects that could take place on a regional level, but be delivered at a local level to achieve the Kiwisport objectives: More kids, More opportunities, Better skills. For example coaching, cluster models or sport volunteers.

We initially endeavoured to have a plan on the management and the allocation of these funds to SPARC by mid-Nov, but given the exploration of these regional projects we are anticipating this to now take a little longer. We will be posting regular Kiwisport updates on our website for your convenience.
