Active Movement
Active Movement/Koringa Hihiko is engaging in quality physical movement experiences, which enhance the spiritual, emotional, cognitive and physiological growth of children.

The Early Childhood Physical Activity Reference Group developed the term in recognition of the impact of positive and appropriate early movement experiences on the way infants, toddlers and young children learn, grow and participate in physical activity.

Opportunities for Active Movement from birth for all children are essential for brain development. Active Movement will strengthen the connections within the brain and the body. The development of these connections is vital for memory, sensory development, communication between the two sides of the brain, processing of information, particiation in the arts and the later formal learning of reading, writing and mathematics.

Primary/Intermediate Schools

SPARC’s Active Schools initiative is a response to the falling physical activity levels among New Zealand primary school children. This initiative aims to increase awareness, skills and education regarding quality physical activity and physical education within school communities. It will enhance student physical activity and overall wellbeing. This will be achieved through a partnership approach between the Ministry of Education and school community development. Active Schools aims to improve physical activity opportunities and experiences in our primary schools by:
  • providing schools with a quality teaching resource outlining co-curricula and cross-curricula physical activity opportunities for kids throughout the school day;
  • working with teachers to help them get the most from the Active Schools teaching resource; and
  • supporting collaborative school and community wide physical activity planning.

Active Schools is about building confidence and competence in our children so that they choose and enjoy participating in sport and recreation for life. Furthermore, it’s about giving children the essential life and basic physical skills and opportunities (early on) to realise their potential.
