The Activators are a tangible benefit of the KiwiSport funding in Waitakere
To determine what our community wanted the KiwiSport funding to be used for, Sport Waitakere consulted with many groups to find out the local sport and recreation needs. One common theme was the need to develop the skill levels of primary school aged students so that they are more confident to get involved in sport and recreation. After further consultation with school Principals, we developed a model which has been termed “Sport Activators Framework”. An Activator is employed by a group of schools to deliver sport and recreation to the students. Schools determine their own different requirements, so a ‘jack of all trades’ is required to fulfil the role. The Activator will deliver programmes that suit each school, such as lunch time games, sports have-a-go days and parent coaching sessions. Ultimately the aim is to give school kids more access to quality sport and recreation opportunities.
Over 40 schools have committed to the Activator model including seven secondary schools. To date six pods (or groups) of schools have been formed to employ Activators.
The pods benefit from the involvement of local secondary schools as it allows a pathway for students as they progress through school which we hope will assist in retaining students within sport and recreation. The Secondary School Sport Coordinator can also assist the Activator to build relationships with local clubs. If your club or recreation group would like to link into the work of the Activators, to improve the skills and opportunities for school-aged children, contact details are below.
