Halberg Trust Sport Opportunity

Halberg Trust Sport Opportunity Programme

The Halberg Trust Sport Opportunity programme is committed to ensuring people with a disability can participate in inclusive sport and active leisure within their community

The Programme is delivered by Sport Opportunity Advisers who work within the Regoinal Sports Trusts located throughout New Zealand. The programme, which started in June 2000, is all about encouraging and enabling people with a disability to participate with their peers in an inclusive environment as they develop within a sporting or recreational pathway.

Integration into inclusive activities is of primary importance in the delivery of the programme. Our vision is to enable people with a disability the opportunity to be more active, more often.

The No Exceptions Training (NET) programme

The NET programme has been developed by SPARC, and is delivered by our Halberg Trust Sport Opportunity Adviser. The purpose of the programme is:
“to provide a national network of education and support for sport and recreation providers to enable them to increase their confidence, knowledge and skills, to create better opportunities for more people with disabilities.”
The main way the programme achieves this is through the delivery of sport and active leisure training workshops to assist community providers to include more people with a disability in their sport and physical activity programs.

Interactive training workshops are delivered to schools, clubs, community groups and leisure facilities.

The Halberg Trust Activity Fund

The Halberg Trust Activity Fund provides grants to enable young people with a disability to participate in inclusive sport and active leisure within their community.

The main goal is to support activities that are regular, ongoing, build skills and confidence, remove barriers and are fun! The Activity Fund is one example of the Trust's commitment to getting more active, more often.

What can you apply for?

The Activity Fund is available to support the additional costs associated with having a disability, which is the cost over and above what an non-disabled child or their parents would be reasonably expected to pay.

An application can be made for one activity during a 12 month period. An applicant will only be approved once for any activity, for example one set of swimming lessons. Equipment grants will be approved up to $1,500 only.

Who can apply?

Any person between the ages of 8 - 18 (or age 5 – 18 for swimming) with a disability. An organisation or advocate acting on their behalf, for example parents, teachers, coaches, schools or sports clubs.

What is not eligible?

Halberg Trust does not provide grants for the following:

Any activity that does not have the philosophy of ordinary people doing ordinary things in ordinary places
programmes or activities that are performed in separate environments that do not have a clear pathway to inclusion
