Ki o Rahi Inter Schools Event – Trusts Stadium Fields
While the activities are going on inside the stadium, you can also watch the Ki o Rahi competition being played by up to 24 secondary schools and 8 intermediates on the fields outside. The first games will start at approximately 10am.
A representative team of 6 males and 6 females will be selected to represent Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland at the Regional Secondary School Ki o Rahi Competition, to be held on 18th August in Ngaruawahia.
Ki-o-rahi is based on a number of traditional Maori ball games and is very popular among many schools and communities throughout the country. It is a fast-paced sport incorporating skills similar to rugby union, tag and touch and is great for all fitness levels and all ages to play. Ki O Rahi has links to Matariki and each of the seven pou (posts) surrounding the papatakaro (playing field) are named after the stars in the Matariki constellation.
The event has grown rapidly since 2009 where 8 schools participated specifically in the Ki o Rahi. The interactive games component was added in 2010. 2011 saw 28 participating kura/schools including Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Hoani Waititi, TKKM o Te Raki Paewhenua, TKKM o Mangere, TKKM o Opuau, TKKM o Ngā Tapuwae, Hato Petera College, Glenfield College, Te Kura o Tiriwa – Massey High School, Te Wharekura o Rakaumanga, Northcote College, Mahurangi College and Takapuna College.
