My Team and Me Netball Project

The support of KiwiSport Funding has meant Netball Auckland Waitakere are partnering with Netball Waitakere to deliver the My Team and Me coach education programme developed by Netball New Zealand. This programme focuses on empowering student coaches and new parent/teacher coaches to coach netball. Currently the KiwiSport Fund has funded 168 coaches to over the last year. Lynette Brady, General Manager at Netball Auckland Waitakere said “the KiwiSport fund has provided the opportunity for netball coaches delivering to Waitakere children and youth are better equipped, have more confidence and provide a quality netball experience”.

The workshop has provided coaches with a tool kit of ideas for team building, establishing team culture plus general season and practice planning. This is delivered by putting theory into practice in interactive practical sessions and best of all the coaches now have a network where they can share ideas and knowledge. Sue Isaacs, President of Glenora Netball said “everyone who attended found it very informative, helpful and fun. The workbook and training booklet are great resources for newer coaches….ideas and knowledge will certainly be put to good use”. Developing 'Run, Jump, Throw' Skills

Two Waitakere athletics clubs are celebrating the success of new programmes that were introduced over the past summer. Both programmes were funded by the SPARC KiwiSport fund, which is administered by Sport Waitakere. It is heartening to see successful results coming out of this new funding initiative. Athletics is a great way for children to learn fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping and throwing. By moving in a ‘meaningful’ way, they’ll gain awareness of what their bodies can do, and develop vital brain connections.

Waitakere Athletics was granted funding to run a 6 week ‘Kiwi Athletics’ programme in Royal Road and Massey Primary Schools. The aim was to teach basic athletics skills to the Year 7and 8 students and also upskill the teachers, thus ensuring teachers felt confident to continue running athletics sessions after the completion of the programme. 100 students had the opportunity to participate and learn skills such as long jump, discus, javelin and relays. Waitakere Athletics is hoping to expand this programme to other schools next season.

Te Atatu Athletics used their funding to train four Rutherford High School students to coach run, jump and throw skills to 5 year olds at the club. Each week the students coached a group of 35 five year olds at their club at Ramlea Park, Te Atatu. Evaluation of the project showed success - participation in the 5 year old group increased by 74% from the previous season!
