This year rewarding our pre elite athletes to achieve by supporting them with a financial scholarship has already produced some amazing results. We at Sport Waitakere would like to spot light some of our newer recipients.
Assisting young people of the West to achieve their potential through sport:
Benedict Chong Wong
Future Track and Field Star, Benedict has already had a number of successes this year. He is currently ranked 1st New Zealand under 18 Men’s Shot Put and 5th in the World for 5kg Shot Put under 18 men. Benedict has credits his love for the sport to his coach and Waitakere Athletics Club. Benedict attended the Annual Scholarship awards Dinner after flying in from the Ukraine only hour before. He commented on how much of a privilege it was to accept the award and that it would make a huge impact on his future goals.
Small in stature yet his achievements have him at the top of his field, Brahm’s chosen sport is wrestling where he has been the current champion in his weight since 2008. Reports for Brahm have him competing in a variety of sports from Judo to triathlon. His long term goal is to represent New Zealand at the next Commonwealth Games.
Taylor is a quite spoken young man who is currently enrolled at Massey High School. Taylor continues to impress with a 1st in the Western Zone Secondary School boys, 1st Auckland Club Champs under 18 men’s and 1st in New Zealand Track and Field. Taylor is looking to defend his National Secondary Schools title as well as qualify for the World Juniors.
Adel Van der Walt
Adel has taken her sport Judo to the next level; she has her goals clearly marked in her calendar. Medal at the senior World Champions and qualify for the 2014 Commonwealth games. Adel is also balancing her studies at Rutherford College while fitting her training schedule in. Her long term goal is to qualify for the 2016 Olympic games in Rio.
